@AMERICA
Today I gave a presentation about my life in Indonesia at an event called @america. @america is the name of the event but it is also the name of this really cool lounge/event place in Pacific Place Mall. PP is an extremely fancy mall in Jakarta with the sort of stores like Prada, Hermes and the like. Even though I’ve lived here 10 months already I actually just found @america existed. Hopefully I’ll be able to attend another event there before I leave. They have been having some really cool events that I hadn’t known about before. I heard from one of US Embassy officials that it’s one of the first places in the world to try and connect the US Embassy with the local people. It was certainly a very cool place to visit.
Anyway a couple weeks ago I was told to prepare a short 10 minute presentation for what I thought was a small event at the actual US Embassy located in Jakarta. I didn’t really worry that much about the presentation and it turned out fine. However, note to future exchange students, try to practice more than I did if you have to give a speech/presentation! I ended up improvising a lot but I did make a few mistakes. Treat every speech/presentation like it’s going to be filmed! But beside that I had a really great time. About 20 kids from my school joined me and that morning we took a big bus and ended up missing a full school day. Almost all of my closest friends went with me and we had a great time. The @america venue is kind of like a private club, but in the back it had a stage area with tiered seats like a TV set. The security was very strict but good. Before we entered I met one of my close American friends Baillie. She did the same “my life in Indonesia” presentation and she had also brought about 20 friends from her school.

At the end of my presentation I asked the audience to help me with my capstone project. Read more about my capstone here.
Here is an excerpt from my presentation: Saya benar tidak bisa menjelaskan semua pengalam saya di dalam satu powerpoint. Kalau presentasi saya satu jam itu masih tidak cukup. saya pasti tidak bisa cerita tentang semua saya sudah belajar dan dapat dari tahun ini. Saya ingin give my most heartfelt thanks to the US State Department untuk Kasih opportunity ini ke saya. Terima kasih banyak semua!
Translation: There is really no way I can explain all of my incredible experiences in one PowerPoint. If my presentation was an hour long it still wouldn’t be enough. I’ve learned so much this year. I would like to give my most heartfelt thanks to the US Department of State for making this possible for me. I would also like to say thank you to my amazing host family, amazing school and all of my friends here. It won’t be possible to forget my incredible experiences here in Indonesia. Thank you so much!
